Greece George I gold Specimen "Zappas Olympics" Class B Award

Greece
George I gold Specimen "Zappas Olympics" Class B Award Medal 1875 SP64 NGC, Paris mint. 37mm. 30.05gm. By Barre. A very rare "Class B" Victor's Award medal struck in gold for the Zappas Olympics. These games represent an early revival of the ancient Olympic Games in the modern era and were personally sponsored by Greek businessman Evangelis Zappas, who provided the funds to stage and build the infrastructure required for the event. Class B medals like the example at hand represent a second prize in the games, and the issues from this period as a whole may be considered as a form of predecessor to the later bronze, silver, and gold medals that became associated with the modern international Olympic games we know today. Struck in high relief, with well-chiseled, bold features and mirrored golden fields surrounding, the offering stands as the sole example of its type certified by NGC to date.
