Italy.- Rome.- Barbault (Jean) Les Plus Beaux Monuments de Rome Ancienne [&] Les Plus Beaux Edifices de Rome Moderne, together 2 vol., first editions, both with half-titles and titles with engraved vignette, first work 'Ancienne' with engraved head-piece to dedication and 73 engraved plates, most with 2 images (one view and a smaller detail), second work 'Moderne' with 20 engraved vignettes but only 43 double-page engraved plates mounted on stubs (of 44, lacking plate 38 of Palais Caprarole), also lacking leaf S of text (pp.35-36), first work with number of plates supplied in ink on title and light foxing, second work foxed and lightly browned in parts, worming to upper corners and margins of plates 18-20 & accompanying text and to outer margins of plates 34 & 35 (partly repaired), leaf K washed and torn (repaired and mounted on stub), both with a few minor marginal tears and repairs, contemporary half vellum over green stained vellum, gilt-stamped red morocco labels (first chipped), red edges, rubbed and marked, a few small stains, slight wear to joints, [Cohen-Ricci 112; Fowler 37, first work only; Berlin Kat. 2712, second work only], folio, Rome, Bouchard et Gravier, de l'Imprimerie de Komarek, 1761-63. ⁂ A complementary pair of volumes displaying the architectural splendours of ancient and modern Rome, from the ruined temples of the Forum to the magnificent Renaissance and Baroque churches and palaces. The plates are mostly engraved by Montagu, Freicenet or Giraud after drawings by Barbault, a former student of Piranesi.
