[Boulogne/ Seine, Saturday 20 December 1946]

addressed to "My dear friend" [Mme Marie Lagrange], he tells her about their friendship, his family and their memories of "the dark hours we lived through" [at the Repaire, in Saint Léonard de Noblat, during the war, where they spent several Christmases]. - He regrets not having any news of Marie Thérèse [Lagrange] - He asks her what she is doing in Saint Dié - He sends her his best wishes - "It is very cold in Paris, but it is Paris; so we are happy".

With, on the third page, an ORIGINAL DRAWING in pen, SIGNED "ELIE", titled "Joyeux Noà «l et Bonne Année 1947" [Merry Christmas and Happy New Year 1947].

Depicting a conversation under the window between Lascaux and his friend Marie Lagrange in December 1946.

Élie Lascaux, a French naive painter, settled in Montmartre at the end of the First World War. There he met Georges Limbour and Suzanne Valadon, who encouraged him to paint and introduced him to Max Jacob. Lascaux also met André Malraux, Raymond Queneau, but also André Beaudin and Juan Gris. In 1922, he met Daniel-

Henry Kahnweiler, an art dealer, who became his dealer and protector.

During the Second World War, he took refuge in a villa near Saint-Léonard-de-Noblat, in the Limousin region, together with other Jewish people: Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, Michel Leiris, founder of the Collège de Sociologie, and the writer Raymond Queneau. For three years, the protagonists of this exodus read, wrote, drew and supported each other in the face of adversity: «three years of happiness, paradise in the shadow of the crematoria», said Kahnweiler. ‘Virgin and Child’ was painted during this period. Élie Lascaux was also a good friend of Pablo Picasso, who supported him in the 1960s for his boldness and perseverance. Picasso had a collection of drawings by Élie Lascaux.

adressée à   “Ma chère amie” [Mme Marie Lagrange]: il lui parle de leur amitié, de sa famille et de leur souvenirs "des heures obscures que nous vivions" [au Repaire, à   Saint Léonard de Noblat, pendant la guerre ou ils passèrent plusieurs Noà «ls] - Il regrette de n'avoir pas de nouvelles de Marie Thérèse [Lagrange] - Il lui demande ce qu'elle devient à   Saint Dié - Il lui envoie ses voeux - "Il fait très froid à   Paris, mais c'est Paris; alors nous sommes heureux".

Avec, sur la troisième page, un DESSIN ORIGINAL à   la plume, SIGNÉ "ELIE", titré

Élie Lascaux, artiste peintre naà ¯f français, s’installe à   Montmartre à   la fin de la Première Guerre Mondiale. Il y rencontre Georges Limbour et Suzanne Valadon, qui

l’encourage à   peindre et le présente à   Max Jacob. Lascaux fréquente aussi André Malraux, Raymond Queneau, mais également André Beaudin et Juan Gris. En 1922, il rencontre Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, un marchand de tableau, qui devient son marchand et son protecteur.

Pendant la Deuxième Guerre Mondiale, il se réfugie dans une villa près de Saint-Léonardde- Noblat, dans le Limousin, ensemble avec d’autres juifs : Daniel-Henry Kahnweiler, Michel Leiris, fondateur du Collège de sociologie, l’écrivain Raymond Queneau. Pendant

trois ans les protagonistes de cet exode lisent, écrivent, dessinent, se soutiennent face à   l’adversité « trois années de bonheur, le paradis à   l’ombre des fours crématoires », en dira Kahnweiler. ‘La Vierge à   l’Enfant’ a été réalisée pendant cette période.

Élie Lascaux est aussi un bon ami de Pablo Picasso qui le soutiendra dans les années 1960 pour son audace et sa persévérance. Picasso avait une collection de dessins de Élie Lascaux.
