African Ceremonial staff, in DR Congo Luba style


L. 87,5 cm. Wooden shaft mounted on iron tube and trimmed on the side with silver sheet metal band. Staff topped by two female figures with bulges on their necks and cross hair knots. The finely carved figures, holding each other at the waist, each grasping one of their breasts, a posture symbolizing fertility. Incised diamonds on the triangular wooden shaft. Light wood with brown patina. Contours and surfaces rounded and rubbed, dam. on arms and breasts. Formerly collection of Heinrich Görtz. (180)
