Note :
This bust of a young woman is part of the Art Nouveau work of Paul-Francois Berthoud. Trained by sculptors Emmanuel Fontaine and Antonin Larroux, he was one of the founders of the Salon d'Automne. In 1900, with his passion for the performing arts and theater in particular, Berthoud enjoyed great success with his terracotta bust of Sarah Bernhardt (Clermont-Ferrand, Musee d'art Roger-Quilliot, inv. 984.1.101).
The busts of Sarah Bernhardt, whom he portrayed on several occasions, are his most important works. Sarah Bernhardt was a French theater and film actress, one of the most famous and acclaimed of the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
