George Romney
British, 1734-1802
Girl with a Dog, Holding a Bonnet, with Cherries in Her Apron
Oil on canvas
40 3/4 x 32 1/8 inches (103.5 x 81.5 cm)
This portrait will be included in the forthcoming catalogue raisonne of the artist's paintings now in preparation by Alex Kidson of the Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art and soon to be published by Yale University Press. Once thought to represent Miss Alison Grimshaw, this lovely portrait of an unknown young girl is, in Kidson's words, "a characteristic early work of the period immediately before he [Romney] left Kendal for London (i.e. of circa 1761)." We are deeply grateful to Alex Kidson for his assistance in the attribution of this work.
