A LARGE JAIN PILLAR STONE FRAGMENT, 12TH - 14TH CENTURY
India, Rajasthan. The carved stone of a pale ivory tone with depictions of various deities and adoring figures amid structural and ornamental elements, the central goddess flanked by two columns, all beneath two petaled ornaments of round shape.
Provenance:
From a noted private collection in Belgium.
Condition:
Condition overall commensurate with age, extensive wear and losses, remnants of white slip and green pigment, erosion and natural cracks.
Dimensions: Height 46 cm, length 71 cm
Jainism flourished in Western India between the 10th and 12th centuries, with many temples commissioned under the Solanki and Later Pratihara dynasties.
