Founded and directed by Gabriel-Albert Aurier (one of the greatest art critics of his time along with Félix Fénéon), Le Moderniste illustré published the first articles by Émile Bernard and Paul Gauguin (his "Notes sur l'art à l'exposition universelle" and a pamphlet: "Qui tromper-t-on ici?"). Le Moderniste will join La Pléiade then, these two reviews gave birth to the Mercure de France.
