A FRENCH ORMOLU MOUNTED MAHOGANY MARQUETRIED LOUIS XV BUREAU PLAT
Paris, marked MIGEON, mid 18th century

Mahogany, etc., partly engraved and fire shaded. Long, rectangular frame on curved legs, two front drawers, rich bronze mountings, gold tooled leather writing desk. Fine floral marquetry. One drawer stamped MIGEON and JME. Rest. replacements, damage due to age.

The Migeons were a Protestant family of craftsmen in Paris whose father, son and grandson shared the same first name - Pierre. They were both ebenists and merchants and worked under the reign of Louis XV. The first, Pierre I, who died around 1740, did not sign his works, as the use of stamps only became obligatory from 1743. The second and best known, Pierre II, not only produced a large number of pieces of furniture himself, but also had numerous colleagues work for him, so that he is only responsible for some of the furniture bearing his stamp.

Mahagoni, u.a., teils graviert und brandschattiert. Langer, rechteckiger Korpus auf geschweiften Beinen, zwei Frontschübe, reiche Bronzemontierungen, goldgeprägte Leder-Schreibplatte. Feine Blumenmarketerie. In einem Schub gestempelt MIGEON und JME. Rest. erg., Altersschäden.

Die Migeons waren eine protestantische Handwerkerfamilie in Paris, deren Vater, Sohn und Enkel denselben Vornamen trugen - Pierre. Sie waren sowohl Ebenisten als auch Händler und arbeiteten unter der Herrschaft von Ludwig XV. Der erste, Pierre I., der um 1740 starb, signierte seine Werke nicht, da die Verwendung von Stempeln erst ab 1743 obligatorisch wurde. Der zweite und bekannteste, Pierre II, stellte nicht nur selbst eine Vielzahl von Möbeln her, sondern ließ auch zahlreiche Kollegen für sich arbeiten, sodass er nur für einen Teil der Möbel mit seinem Stempel verantwortlich ist.
