watercolour on paper, black rules 29.4 by 39.7cm This and the following lot are from a series painted by a Sikh artist, closely related to three others of this period: a scene of Sikh ladies riding in a covered carriage, signed by Kapur Singh and dated 1874, sold in these rooms 8th May 1997, lot 202, now in the British Museum and currently part of the exhibition 'The Art of the Sikh Kingdoms' at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London (see Stronge 1999, no.41, p.43); a royal procession of Sher Singh, signed by [K]ishan Singh and sold at Christie's, London, 10th October 1989; a scene with Rani Jindan in a carriage with Maharaja Dalip Singh as a child, sold at P and D Colnaghi, 1978 (no.90, pp.76108). Kishan Singh and his son Kapur Singh practised in the Ahluwalia district of Amritsar and examples of both artists are in the collections of the India Office Library, London.
